Why Does my Washing Machine Smell Bad?
University of Arizona microbiology professor Charles Gerba has peered behind the door into the secret world of washing machine bacteria to find that at least 10 grams of dirt leaches into the washing machine water with each wash. This dirt carries many strains of bacteria, including up to 100 million E. Coli. Other bacteria carried in include hepatitis A virus, norovirus, rotavirus and salmonella.
Bacteria passes on to the next load of laundry, but it may also stay in the moist areas of the washing machine. Living organisms, these bacteria in bulk emit gases or odors.
Why would a recognized San Diego plumbing company be discussing washing machines?
We get a few calls every week at Perry Plumbing from people thinking an animal has died in their washing machine, either in the pipes or the motor. Clients assume we fix any water-dependent system, and we are happy to help out. When the washing machine breaks down, however, we turn the job over to appliance repair people. Still, we get enough calls to address smelly washing machines in a quick blog post to help our San Diego clients.
Once a Month Smelly Washing Machine Solution
Keep bacteria from building up in your machine by giving the system a once monthly wash. Put nothing in the machine but:
- Tide Washing Machine Cleaner,
- Smelly Washer Washing Machine Cleaner,
- A fresh Washing Machine Cleaner, or
- ½ cup of bleach
Run the washer on hot, although the 140° or 150° temperature is not enough to kill the bacteria alone. The weak acids in these products will.
You may be surprised to learn that hanging wet clothes on a line kills bacteria as effectively as using bleach. Ultraviolet rays are effective germ-killers. Also consider leaving the washing machine door open between washes to make sure the barrel dries out completely.
