Watch these 5 Common Water Leak Perpetrators this Winter!
Water leaks create robust business for San Diego plumbers. The average cost of a water leak runs into hundreds and even thousands of dollars. If a leak persists undetected for weeks or months, repairing it could involve replacement of flooring, drywall and framing. With black mold a serious health threat, most homeowners choose to be aggressive when remediating any area exposed to water.
The good news is that San Diego homeowners can catch water leaks fast when they are aware of the signs. This winter, keep a careful eye on the usual suspects for water leaks.
Washing Machine Hoses: These last just 3 -5 years, so if it has been longer, look for signs of wear like a blister or bubble in the tube, worn tubing, cracks and loose connections between the tube and the metal valve. Even if there are no signs of wear, damage can occur inside the water hose. Make sure to change them every 3 to 5 years no matter what.
Water Heater: the average tank water heater stores 50 – 80 gallons of water. A leak can cause quite a bit of damage to items stored in your garage and to any rooms adjacent to the garage. Take a look at your water heater for these signs:
- corrosion and rust on any part of the water heater;
- dark colored water coming through any spigot;
- intermittent hot water availability;
- water pooling around the base of the water heater.
Roof: Clean debris from the roof before it clogs gutters and which diverts water to your outside walls.
Washing machine, garbage disposal and/or dish washer. Water pooling around the bases of these appliances indicate a leak.
Toilet: Next time you flush, watch to see how quickly the bowl refills. Remove the toilet lid and make sure the tank is fully refilling, too. If not, you could have a leak.
