The Art of Professional Plumbing!
Human beings have long been obsessed with art- enjoying it, creating it, living it. We see art in everything from paintings, to dance, music, theatre, film; even the clothes we wear and the languages we speak are considered a form of art.
Have you ever thought that the intricate system of pipes, drains, switches, valves, faucets, and fixtures that make up your plumbing system are also a work of art? If you haven’t, you’re not alone. For all our immersion in art, we often overlook the work of art behind our walls that is such a vital part of our everyday lives.
Still not convinced? Let’s take a look, together, at the ways plumbing is a form of art.
Technically, Plumbing Was Always “Art”
Before we begin our debate on what is or is not art, let’s examine the word “art” and what it really means.
The word “art” comes from the Latin word “ars” or “artis,” which has a few different definitions, among them are words like “skill/craft,” “science, knowledge,” and “method.”
With that definition in mind, it can be said that any craft that requires skill and has a method to it, any craft that involves a knowledge of that method, is art. Plumbing is a craft. It requires skill and knowledge of science.
There is a method to every plumbing installation, repair, and replacement. So by the definition of the word, it can be deduced that plumbing has never been anything other than art.
The Wonder of Modern Plumbing
Musical or dancing fountains have been around for almost 200 years since Peter Bodor built the first musical fountain in Transylvania in about 1820.
Today, dancing water shows feature moving water synchronized to music and illuminated with varying colors.
These shows can be seen on almost every continent, and here in the United States have become a popular attraction in places like Las Vegas and Disneyland. The artistry of dancing fountains shows capture the imagination and wonder of adults and children alike.
The modern technology required to put on the spectacle of water, color, and music that so fascinates us would be impossible without good plumbing! So if the show is a work of art, and plumbing is an integral part of that show, then it should stand to reason that plumbing is also part of the art.
Binging The Art to The People: Suburban Uses
Even in our everyday lives, creative plumbing finds ways to astound us in everything from swimming pools and designed lakes to drinking fountains and even water parks!
All throughout our lives, there are ways in which people are getting more and more creative with plumbing and its uses.
With all the evidence provided here, I hope you can shift your perspective- not only about plumbing as an art form- but about any other thing you may be overlooking in your everyday life.
You may not consider it “art” at first thought, but keep an open mind and remember that art is, at its core, anything that requires skill, knowledge, science, craft and has a method. If this article has begun that shift in your thinking, pass it along to a friend!
