San Diego Center for the Blind receives a much-needed gift from two local plumbing companies
In what would have been a costly investment for new, high-quality toilets at the San Diego Center for the Blind (5922 El Cajon Blvd.) will instead be donated for free by two local companies on Tuesday, September 15.
The Center’s mobility specialist, Kasey Markowski, says the six existing toilets within the 43-year-old facility were in immediate need of replacement, citing an offer that recently came through by Perry Plumbing Heating & Air and Ferguson Enterprise to install new Kohler models.
To the delight of the Center’s staff and 150 blind and visually impaired students that use the facility on any given week, the teams are scheduled to begin the two-hour project at 8:15 a.m. on September 15. They will also install an additional toilet at The Center’s Vista outpost (1385 Bonair Drive) on a different day yet to be determined.
Ferguson Enterprises is donating the materials at an estimated value of $300 per toilet, and Perry Plumbing is conducting the installation pro bono, which would normally cost around $1,900 in labor.
“We were going to hire plumbers to have just a few of the toilets replaced out of the Center’s budget until these companies approached us,” adds Markowski. “They were in desperate need of repair or replacement, and these will be of much higher quality.”
According to Anndrea Perry of the family-owned Perry Plumbing, “Our company is all about the success of the community, and we are very happy to be helping the Center for the Blind,” noting that Perry Plumbing has donated to numerous organizations throughout San Diego over the years, including Rebuilding San Diego Together, which reconstructs homes for families in need.
Representatives from The San Diego Center for Blind and staff from the plumbing companies will be on hand for television and print-media interviews on the day of the installation (Sept. 15), from 8 to 10 a.m., at the Rolando facility, 5922 El Cajon Blvd.
