Handicap Plumbing: Remodeling Public Restrooms for PWD
People with disability (PWD) have the right to use the same facilities found in public areas, especially the restroom. As their situation may make it a challenge to move and fit inside the cubicles, it’s necessary to provide a special one for them. If you own any kind of establishment, it’s best to understand that you need to hire only those who are fit to do the job. Remodeling a PWD restroom needs more attention, especially because you have to follow guidelines set by the government.
The Department of Justice has revised the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) Titles II and III to make the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design more beneficial for PWDs. As of March 15, 2012, the construction and remodeling of facilities under both titles should follow the 2010 standards.
At Perry Plumbing, we make sure to follow these standards to promote a PWD-friendly establishment.
The lavatory should have a clearance of at least 29 inches from the bottom of the apron (sink) to the floor. It should also extend up to 17 inches from the back wall and shouldn’t be higher than 34 inches. The faucets should be automatic or at least easy to operate – no more than five pounds of pressure to press or turn. Apart from plumbing, we install lavatories with the right dimensions to give legroom to those who are using wheelchairs and make it easier to reach the sink and faucet.
The toilet should have a minimum width of 60 inches and height of 17 to 19 inches. Its surrounding space should be enough for wheelchair users to turn at any angle, preferably 48 inches deep and 30 inches wide. A horizontal grab bar is also necessary on walls and partitions near the toilet. Our commercial plumbers know exactly where to get and how to install handicap accessible fixtures to follow these standards.
Our experts understand your needs to promote equality in each commercial establishment, especially in restrooms. Contact us for handicap plumbing and other plumbing services to get started.
