Protect Your Plumbing from Sand this Summer
San Diego Plumbing Experts Weigh In
Around August, the number of these phone calls rises dramatically:
- mud and dirt in the shower
- toilet won’t flush
- sinks take forever to drain
With 31 beaches on our 70 miles of coastline, of course families keep San Diego Plumbing experts busy with clogged showers, sinks and toilets. Why toilets? People rinse bathing suits in toilets thinking the sand will just flush away. Lurking in pipes, however, are globs of grease, hair and even bacteria just waiting to catch that sand. Often, pipes are almost completely blocked when they get hit with a glob of sand. Before you know it, your toilet is overflowing or your sink won’t drain.
Perry Plumbing uses video enabled cable inspection system to find blockages fast. We then blow them out with one of several environmentally-friendly methods: high pressure water jetting, razor-cutter enabled cables and bio-clean drain cleaner. That means no cutting into the floors or walls and pipes still get scrubbed clean. Still, prevention always makes sense.
San Diego families can avoid getting sand in drains by making just a few adjustments.
Prepare for beach trips beforehand by taking:
Mesh bags rather than sealed bags. Let the sand drain out of the bag the whole walk back to the car.
Flip Flops: One tennis shoe carries lots of sand. Stick with the flip flops.
More beach chairs than towels: Even after a good shake, towels retain sand that eventually grinds away at washing machine and dryer parts. Take towels only for wrapping up in while sitting in the chair. Keep an extra chair just as a towel holder.
At the car, keep:
Bottles of baby or talcum powder: have all beach-goers sprinkle powder over themselves and then brush it all off. Talc is a naturally occurring element and can be left safely in the beach parking lot.
Two old sheets: line the backseat floor and the trunk where boogie boards and beach bags go.
Hairbrushes: to brush sand out of long, lovely locks.
At home, keep:
A plastic laundry basket in the garage or downstairs bathroom: Specifiy one bathing suit removal bathroom. Take towels and bathing suits all outside and hose off and then hang. Better, everyone does it for himself or herself.
