Prevent 3 Common San Diego Commercial Plumbing Emergencies
Save money for your business or for your boss when you take a few proactive steps that avoid thousands in commercial plumbing repair costs.
For more than 30 years, family-owned San Diego plumbing contractor Perry Plumbing has responded to commercial plumbing emergencies in restaurants, small businesses, industrial parks, manufacturing sites and more.
Often, we find that these emergencies could have been prevented with a few simple precautions. We are happy to give you our tips and tricks here.
Commercial Drain Clogs
Keep a laminated, waterproof list by every sink that delineates all items that cannot go into the sink. Put grease at the top of the list. Items that should not go into a garbage disposal include: egg shells, stringy vegetables like celery or chard, rice, pasta, coffee grounds, bones and fruit pits.
Keep all sink drains clear regularly by pouring boiling water down them once per week or flushing them equal even white vinegar and baking soda, followed by five minutes of hot water flushing. If this does not do it, commercial drain cleaning does a thorough, fast job.
Nothing like noxious sewer odors to repel potential clients. If your place of business has a floor drain, chances are you have run up against this problem. Strong sewer odors can be stopped. The U-shaped pipe below a typical floor drain is meant to prevent sewer odors from permeating the room. If water in the U-shaped trap dries up, the sewer will most likely begin again to release fumes. In order to prevent this from happening, pour small amounts of liquid odor block down the floor drains every few months.
Commercial Water Heater Leak Prevention
According to the Institute for business and Home Safety, water heater failures cost an average of $4,444 per incident. While even an affordable water heater replacement itself is not that expensive, the water damage to the surrounding area gets pricey. If you even tell your boss that you are taking measures to prevent this from happening—and maybe mention the thousands of dollars a water heater leak can cost—you show the initiative that makes you a most valued employee.
Take a good look at the water heater. If the leak exists, water droplets form on the outside of the tank and can be seen. Nearby deterioration and soft, spongy walls and flooring mean water leakage. Check, too, for pipe corrosion, mold, mildew and lime buildup. These signs also mean you have a leak.
Flush the water heater two times a year in order to prevent any unwanted residue from forming. Hook up a hose to drain the tank or hire a plumber, just to be sure.
