Plumbing Tips for a Greener San Diego Home in 2016
Need a plumber’s perspective on a creating a greener San Diego Home for 2016? Plumbers do a lot more than swap out faucets and toilets. As San Diego’s expert plumbing and HVAC technicians we have been on the inside of homes from Del Mar to Chula Vista. We’ve see and even installed the most efficient and cutting edge appliances and plumbing systems to “green” up homes, whether they’re in a high-end mansion in La Jolla or a super-eco-friendly cottage in Bonita.
Fix those leaks:
A leak that is unaccounted for can waste up to 15-20 gallons each day. San Diego’s water resources cannot withstand that amount of waste. Taking care of leaks when you immediately spot them not only keeps your water bill under control, it benefits all of San Diego and even the farmers in Imperial Valley. Excess water on your lawn can indicate an underground pipe leak. Damp, uneven spots on your floors or walls do as well. Do not forget to check those often overlooked leaky locations, such as the back of your refrigerator, and the area around your water heater or washing machine.
Use energy-efficient appliances:
With such products on the market as low flow toilets, showerheads and faucets, there is no excuse for excessive water usage. The U.S. government has put quite a lot of money into the development of high-efficiency, tankless water heaters, stoves, refrigerators, and washers and dryers. Simply look for appliances with the official “Energy Star” logo, which indicates that these are more energy-efficient than comparable models. The Energy Star program rating system is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency.
Insulate your pipes:
Insulating your pipes will reduce the amount of heat that usually escapes from the pipes as water travels from the water heater to your faucet. Wrapping such material as polyethylene foam, neoprene foam, or fiberglass around your pipes is a relatively inexpensive way to reduce heat loss in your water supply. In addition to saving energy, this moves cuts costs from your water heating bills. The hot water in your pipes will remain warmer longer, and you even will reduce that annoying creaking sound that happens when pipes expand and contract with the temperature change.
Harvest your rainwater:
Did you know that a 1000 square foot roof can create 625 gallons of water with a rainstorm resulting in one inch of rain? This is an especially prudent action with our continued “El Nino” rainstorms on the horizon. (Read more about how to create a rain run off and rain barrel system in our previous post here.) Instead of simply watching useful rainwater drain away, you can collect it in a tank device, or even a pit-device, and re-use it to water your plants, wash your car or driveway. With your own reservoir of collected rainwater at your disposal, you no longer have to be dependent on San Diego’s increasingly costly water usage rules and penalties.
Use “greywater” for your landscaping:
This new concept channels gently used water from your showers, bathtubs, washing machines and bathroom sinks, and re-pipes it to outdoor plants/trees/grass, et cetera. Gently used greywater can be pumped into a temporary storage device (called a surge tank), and then drained out into a hose that can irrigiate your yard. This system not only saves you money, but prevents this water from polluting San Diego’s sewage system.
