Eco-friendly Water Heater Options
Often nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, San Diego homeowners often ask us about the best plumbing choices for the environment as well as for their families. Rest assured, as eco-friendly San Diego plumbing contractors, we stay up-to-date with the manufacturers who use not only the fewest materials, but most recyclable ones as well. Each year, these manufacturers surprise us with newer technologies behind their eco-friendly water heater options that save energy and energy costs, too.
The water heater has come a long way in the past 20 years, giving home and business owners more choice. Review these below to determine which fits into your perception of how best to support the environment. We start from the most traditional and progress to the solar water heater.
Storage Tank Water Heaters: $350 – $1,200
Just because they take up room in the garage and uses lots of metal and glass, some storage tank water heaters can still be considered eco-friendly . . . if you take the right steps to dispose of it.
Environmentally-aware for decades now, Perry Plumbing hauls away your old water heater to the appliance recycling centers around San Diego. There, workers separate the aluminum, copper, steel and glass components, sending each to its appropriate treatment plant to be combined with similar materials. Neither glass nor metal degrades through the recycling process. When it goes to the right treatment facility, nearly all pieces can be recycled. We call this eco-friendly! You can get Energy Star versions of both electric and gas water heaters. Energy Star, a division of the Environmental Protection Agency, reports that a certified electric water heater can save $3,000 in electricity costs over the lifetime of the unit. A gas Energy Star certified water heater can save households between $530 and $2,900 in gas costs.
An obstacle for some of our clients is the fact that the average lifespan of the storage tank water heater is about 13 years. The tankless water heater, on the other hand, lasts 20 years, or 50% longer. The tankless water heater is also much smaller, using fewer materials.
Tankless Heaters: $185 to $2,000
Coming in both electric and gas-powered versions, tankless water heaters warm water on demand by passing it over super-heated coils as needed. The typical storage tank heater expends energy keeping all 40 or 50 gallons warm all day, only to use just 40% for one shower. It takes a lot of energy to keep 50 gallons of water heated constantly.
Although no tankless water heating systems qualify for a tax rebate, the energy costs savings of 35% per year over the storage heater helps it pay for itself in 3 to 5 years. Because of its efficiency, gas heats water faster than electric in a tankless water heater. Solar Water Heaters: $1,500 – $5000
The most expensive eco-friendly water heater option, the solar water heater, uses a system of tubes in a sunny spot on your roof or in your yard to heat water. As with solar power, the solar water heater is most popular in the southwest.
Because of cloudy days, however, most with solar water heaters have an electric or gas back up water heater just in case. This means two water heating systems to inspect, maintain and upgrade. Also, solar equipment is more expensive to install than the standard storage tank water heater.
Still, if cutting energy costs is a goal, our friends at the Department of Energy’s Energy explain on their website that total savings can go as high as 80%.
