10 Crazy Clogs after Thanksgiving: Avoid These Plumbing Hassles
Think your schedule is busy on Black Friday? Ask your local plumber how many houses he has to hit the day after Thanksgiving.
We at Perry Plumbing San Diego know that on 2014’s Black Friday, phones will ring off the hook, just as they have every other day after Thanksgiving in the 30 years since we have been in business.
We will get each and every one of the “unique” calls at least once and possibly several times. Typically these crimes are committed by family members just trying to help with clean up. Still, bringing up this post over appetizers could possibly get you some laughs AND smarter dish duty!
Turkey carcasses flushed down the toilet, clogging sewer lines. Typically we find this in homes without garbage disposals. The turkey carcass should go straight into the garbage, not the toilet.
Shower clog due to dirty dishes in the bathtub. You will not be surprised to learn that most of these come from the college areas. Typically, someone thinks the large tub and the (often removable) shower head will work better than the kitchen sink. While we can almost see the logic, the issue is in the drain. The smaller bathtub drain is not made for food and grease.
Turkey trussing lacing strings or wires around garbage disposal blades. With a sink-full, chances are this just gets swept down the drain.
Giblet bags clogging the disposal. If the garbage disposal is old, it may not be able to handle a giblets bag. Plus some giblets bags are now made out of natural material that does not go well with the disposal.
Shot glasses, broken bottles, wine glasses and plates clogging the garbage disposal. We know you are having fun, but the garbage disposal is no place for glass. If some gets in there, pull as much as you can with pliers before running the disposal. Be sure to unplug the disposal before attempting to remove any item!!
Underwear down the toilet. Add this piece of clothing to a sewer line already partially clogged by roots or grease and you have a full-on clog.
Garbage disposal packed to the top with potato peels marinating in greasy gravy. Helpers shoved everything they could into the disposal until it was filled to the top, then used cold water rather than hot to flush it. It all turned into a solid, gelatinous block.
Waste clogs: Think having 20 for Thanksgiving stresses you out? Ask your low-flush toilet if it is ready for the onslaught. More people and more food just mean more waste, particularly for low flush toilets. Do use non-fluffy toilet paper, tell people where ALL the toilets are in the house so that the work is divided between all units. A slow moving drain can be blasted out with water jetting before the your extended family arrives.
