Best Fixtures for Small Bathrooms
If you are redecorating a small bathroom, do not stop at the tile and wall treatments. The following fixtures work in small bathrooms and could widen your décor opportunities. Perry Plumbing has worked with scores of San Diego’s general contractors and interior designers to bring to life small bathroom remodels from La Jolla to Bonita to Point Loma.
Fixture Placement for the Small Bathroom Remodel
In a small bathroom, even six inches means a lot. Rather than having a countertop to drop your sink into, designers can put the sink edge against the wall. Creative plumbing gets the faucet as well as the hot and cold water taps to emerge from the wall itself. Another solution is to use single hole faucets (rather than the three hole version) which make a narrow sink appear chic rather than cramped. Using high-end hardware that makes a statement adds unique character to a small bathroom.
Storage and Cabinets (or Lack of) for a Small Bathroom
There is no getting around the fact that the small bathroom will not have a great deal of storage space. Before you begin the remodel, consider whether you have a nearby hall closet for the majority of towels and bathroom supplies. In the bathroom itself, consider shelving with attractive brackets at head height or higher. Corner shelves also save space. This keeps clutter away from eye level. With a full sink cabinet too large for the space, many homeowners choose pedestal sinks, again cutting storage space.
Toilets for the Small Bathroom Remodel
Small spaces call for small toilets, so consider finding a compact, elongated toilet that, while smaller, is still comfortable. The tiniest bathrooms do well with a wall hung toilet where the tank is actually embedded behind the wall. This saves at least six inches. Think a corner toilet would be your best bet? American Standard makes a toilet with a (triangular tank rather than rectangular), perfect for tucking the toilet into a corner. You probably will not be surprised to learn that many compact toilets are made by Japanese company Toto, which has a US division in Georgia.
Shower and Tub Choices for the Small Bathroom Remodel
There are several ways to get serviceable bathtubs and showers even into very small bathrooms. First, manufacturers make bathtubs with curved basins that maintain volume while cutting length. Deep tubs, too can save on length and width. Believe it or not, we have installed a 48-inch spa tub (from manufacturer Amery) into a small bathroom. It is not only very deep but very hot and bubbly!
Those who want to determine the best fit can gather sizes from the various models they are considering and put duct-tape out a footprint of it on the bathroom floor. We always take duct tape with us when we are out on any San Diego plumbing repair call because often clients drop that they are considering a bathroom remodel and ask about design options.
As for design, the footed, “pedestal” tub takes up less visual space because it seems to float free from the floor.
