Behind Your Dirty Dishwasher Issues | Dishwasher Plumbing Repair San Diego
There is something about clean dishes that makes the whole house feel clean. The typical dishwasher lasts nine to 10 years . . . longer with good maintenance. With scores of moving parts trying coordinate the washing of plates from multiple family members with multiple dishwashing styles, every dishwasher will need repair at some point.
While most of our San Diego clients do not really want to fix their own dishwashers, they seem to have a persistent curiosity about what exactly is going on. We are happy to write a blog post about it! The more our clients know about our services, the better. We provide the precision dishwasher repair and replacement services that get those dishes sparkling clean again.
San Diego’s Most Prevalent Dishwasher Problems
Symptom: Grimy dishes and glasses despite complete washer cycle.
Diagnosis 1: Clogged dishwasher arm
When you hear the dishwasher complete its full cycle but the dishes still turn up with specks of food and grime, the issue most likely is a clogged dishwasher arm.
Treatment: San Diego’s hard water can even clog dishwasher arms with mineral deposits. A plumber will remove all arms and clean them with special solutions. A re-run of the dishwasher should produce clean dishes.
Diagnosis 2: Sub-optimal dishwasher usage carried out by user.
- run water until it is hot in the SINK so that this warmed up water starts your dish cycle; warm water cleans better;
- leave “heat dry” off. This only bakes on residue and wastes electricity;
- avoid “delay” cycle. This cycle uses cold water, which does not clean the dishes as well;
Symptom: Kitchen smells of rotten food
Diagnosis: Backed up filter basket
Living under the lower arm, the filter basket is completely ignorable, until it starts smelling. Food bits get trapped and start to rot, filling the kitchen with odors.
Treatment: A plumber will remove the arm and clean the basket while inspecting the other elements of the unit.
Symptom: Standing water in bottom of dishwasher
Diagnosis: Clogged dishwasher drain
The drain in the bottom of the dishwasher is clogged with food, plastic lids or other small items.
Treatment: The plumber will remove the dishwasher arm and basket and inspect the drain. After removal of food and objects, if the unit still does not drain, the plumber will need to slide the dishwasher out and inspect the drain hose below the bottom panel. A damaged draining hose will need to be replaced.
