If your water does smell or has a strange color, do not drink or bathe in it. Doing so could result in serious disease.
What Is “Backflow?”
As you can see from the image above, every business or home involves a complex system of pipes. Pipes come in from San Diego’s water system, but they also run out to the public sewer. In each pipe, water flows only one direction.
For example, the kitchen sink drain runs from the home ONLY TO the sewer system. Water coming from the kitchen faucet is directed ONLY INTO the home from the city water supply at the street. At places under the home and on the way to the street these pipes sometimes intersect.
Throughout your plumbing system, parts or gates exist that prevent the clean and dirty water flow from going in the wrong direction or into the wrong type. These parts, called backflow preventers, can break down, allowing dirty sink water to run back into your sink.
In addition, if there has been new construction in your neighborhood, you may be in need of backflow prevention and repair services. Often the builder is responsible for paying the plumber in these cases. Just know that if there is nearby construction your neighborhood, you should watch your water closely for changes in color or odor.
San Diego Firefighting: An Unfortunate Cause Of Backflow Issues
In Spring of 2014, we were amazed at how quickly San Diego firefighters extinguished several blazes in highly populated areas. Sometimes, a neighborhood’s safety depends on several trucks hitting the closest fire hydrants all at once. As much as we appreciate them, these necessary actions can cause water pressure to drop precipitously in nearby homes and businesses, wreaking havoc on plumbing systems.
