What is an Air Handler?
This component of your AC system is the large gray or metallic box that encases all the other important components of the system. Subcomponents such as the blower motors, heating and cooling units, air circulation fans, sound attenuators, filters and dampers can all be found in this location. The handler is connected to your ventilation system, and pumps cooled and condensed conditioned air through your ductwork. When we discuss the need for a constant supply of clean, fresh air circulating through the system, it’s the air handler that we are referring to.
Common Air Handler Problems
The most common air handler problems revolve around the fact that this unit needs to be thoroughly clean to function properly. Some of the most common issues that come up include:
Mechanical subcomponents can malfunction if exposed to dirt, bacteria or other pathogens in the air.
These components work to trap the dust and other debris before it enters the unit. If the filter is dirty or clogged, it will cause the unit to work harder and strain itself. This, in turn, can overheat components or cause other problems in the handler. We recommend changing the filters at least twice per year to prevent this from happening.
The coil is responsible for transferring heat and helping to condense the air returning from the system. If the coil becomes dirty, it can freeze and have a ripple effect on the other components such as the condenser unit that need to work harder to compensate for the frozen coil.
If for any reason, the handler itself becomes structurally compromised, it would have serious effects on the other components. Leaks, cracks, dents and other damage sustained should be fixed right away.
The best way to prevent problems with your air handler is to invest in regular maintenance. Our team will check all the relevant subcomponents that are vital to the efficient cooling of your home.
